Job Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and proactive individual to work as a one-on-one after-school tutor for an exceptional 12-year-old girl with apraxia. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of special education, communication, and developmental disabilities. It is ideal for a current college student or recent graduate looking for meaningful and fulfilling work before pursuing graduate school.
As a Communication Tutor/Partner, you will play a key role in supporting the child’s ability to communicate effectively, utilizing alternative and augmentative communication methods (S2C - Spelling to Communicate using an alphabet board or keyboard). This job is a wonderful opportunity to learn about inclusive education, sensory processing, speech and language development, and the rights of individuals with disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Support and guide the child’s use of alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) tools, helping her express herself through spelling, letter boards, and/or keyboards.
Assist with academic support at home, helping with schoolwork, reading, and other educational activities.
Encourage and assist in building and maintaining friendships with peers and others in the community.
Participate in therapy appointments and specialist consultations, helping to reinforce strategies from therapy at home and in the community.
Engage in physical activities (such as outdoor play and exercise) in various weather conditions to ensure a balanced and active lifestyle.
Actively foster a positive, supportive, and patient environment to build trust and a strong relationship with the child.
Collaborate with a team of educational and developmental professionals to receive ongoing support and training.
Qualifications:
No prior experience with children with disabilities is required , though it is a plus.
A positive, professional attitude , with an eagerness to learn and grow in a supportive environment.
Strong communication skills and the ability to be patient, attentive, and adaptable.
A clean driving record and reliable transportation (as some activities may involve community outings).
Reliable, consistent, and punctual with the ability to commit to regular hours.
Interest in the fields of special education, developmental disabilities, speech and language therapy , and/or inclusive education .
Must be at least 18 years old (required for the safety and well-being of the child).
