Job Overview:
The Department of History, Political Science, and Sociology at Albertus Magnus College invites applications for a full-time faculty member to teach introductory as well as upper-level courses in the Sociology major (including Contemporary Sociological Theory and Sociology of Law) as well as offer first year seminar courses in the college's new General Education program: Invitation to Inquiry. This department, newly created through the merging of the Department of History and Political Science with the Department of Sociology is a growing and dynamic department that is looking to capitalize on our collective strengths through innovative, cross-disciplinary course offerings, experiential learning opportunities, and robust community engagement (both on and off campus). If contributing to this type of effort appeals to you, we would be interested in considering your application. The successful candidate will engage in teaching, course coordination, and department and college service and will work collaboratively with colleagues across the college. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience. This is an in-person position, a 10-month position. The expected start date is August 19, 2025.

In this search, we welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of areas of concentration, though the department is particularly interested in developing course offerings with a global or transnational focus, so applicants will need to speak to how they can meaningfully contribute to that ongoing effort. Applicants who have a background/strong interest in teaching a course on the history of education (broadly understood) will also be strongly considered.

Education:
Earned Ph.D. in Sociology or a closely related field. The College will consider doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of completing their degrees.

Qualifications:
  • Evidence of experience in teaching a variety of sociology courses in person, hybrid and online at the college level
  • Strong evidence of/potential for engaged and dynamic teaching
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team


Essential Functions:

  • Duties include teaching 24 credits per year over two academic semesters (fall and spring), service on college committees, attending faculty meetings, advising students, and active participation in program departmental and college events.
  • Deliver didactic and experiential instruction in the mathematics program.
  • Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of Albertus Magnus College, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines and evaluation criteria.
  • Provide engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
  • Participate in service activities, including shared governance, and attend College's activities such as convocation, graduation, and ceremonies.
  • Use the college's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments and other materials and to communicate with students.
  • Advise and assist students through office hours or scheduled appointments, by phone or email, and through other college-approved mechanisms.
  • Provide service including student mentoring, ongoing course development, and assessment.
  • Contribute to periodic reviews and revisions of departmental course offerings.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge in discipline and areas of expertise.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Language Skills: Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a group member in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
