Job Description

Position Overview:

The Treasurer is a vital member of the Colorado Wildlife Federation (CWF) Board of Directors and part of the Executive Committee. This role involves overseeing the financial health of the organization, ensuring transparency, compliance, and sustainability, and contributing to the advancement of CWF’s mission: advocating for the conservation of Colorado’s fish, wildlife, and their habitats.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Oversight and Strategy

  • Be responsible for the oversight of the Executive Director’s management of the day-to-day financial activities of the Federation
  • Review and present financial reports, budgets, and statements at Board meetings in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Oversee the development and board review of the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board Executive Committee.
  • Monitor the organization’s financial health, ensuring sustainability and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Work in concert with the Executive Director to ensure timely and accurate completion of financial filings, including IRS Form 990, state filings, and grant reporting.

Compliance and Accountability

  • Maintain oversight of internal financial controls and policies to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and ethical standards.
  • Support a third-party financial audit or review to identify opportunities for improvement.

Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Collaborate with the Board and staff to support fundraising efforts, including project-specific campaigns and donor outreach.
  • Offer financial insights to guide strategic fundraising initiatives and ensure alignment with CWF’s goals.

Executive Committee Participation

  • Act as a key advisor to the Executive Committee on financial matters.
  • Assist with strategic decision-making and long-term planning for the organization.

Board Engagement and Communication

  • Provide financial updates to Board members to ensure informed decision-making.
  • Work closely with the Board Chair, Executive Director, and staff to maintain clear and regular communication about financial matters.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Professional Expertise:
    • Experience in finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial management. CPA or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Familiarity with financial software (e.g., QuickBooks), budgeting tools, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Commitment to Mission:
    • Passion for wildlife conservation and the mission of CWF.
  • Nonprofit Experience:
    • Familiarity with nonprofit operations, including fundraising and donor stewardship, is a plus.
  • Strong Communication Skills:
    • Ability to present financial information in a clear, accessible manner to Board members and stakeholders.
  • Ethical Integrity:
    • A commitment to ethical standards and financial transparency.

Commitment:

  • Attendance at bimonthly Board meetings and annual meeting.
  • Participation in monthly Executive Committee meetings.
  • Time required for reviewing financial documents, collaborating with the Executive Director, and fulfilling Treasurer responsibilities. Most intensive months are December and January.
  • Dedicate 5–10 hours per month to Board-related activities, including meetings, outreach, and special projects.
  • Participate in one of the Board committees.
  • Term length of standard board term of three years, with the option for renewal as outlined in CWF bylaws.
