Job Description

One of our clients is seeking an experienced Data Analyst to support metadata management, data governance, and security initiatives . Reporting to the Data Curation Lead , this role will focus on maintaining the Commonwealth’s Business Glossary, supporting metadata tools, and managing data lineage and governance artifacts .

The successful candidate will work in a high-impact environment where they will engage with business analysts, solution designers, and IT professionals to ensure data is accurately cataloged, protected, and aligned with governance best practices .

This is a hybrid role requiring 4 days per week on-site in Richmond, VA . Only local candidates will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

Business Glossary & Data Catalog Management

• Maintain and administer the Commonwealth’s Business Glossary to track metadata, classification, and sensitivity standards .
  
• Assist in data catalog development , supporting onboarding of new data sources .
  
• Work with business analysts and solution designers to define and document critical data elements .
  

Metadata & Data Lineage

• Capture and maintain metadata artifacts , ensuring data lineage is well-documented from creation to output .
  
• Conduct metadata and data quality audits , report findings, and assist in remediation.
  
• Work with technical teams to implement metadata and data modeling tools such as Purview or Informatica .
  

Data Governance & Security

• Ensure compliance with data protection standards (data discovery, classification, labeling, rights management, and loss prevention).
  
• Assist in implementing data security measures and documenting data governance processes .
  
• Support data governance best practices across big-data processing projects .
  

Automation & Reporting

• Use Power Platform tools to automate workflows and improve agency efficiency.
  
• Utilize Excel (Pivot Tables, formulas, data validation) for data analysis and reporting.
  
• Track and report on data governance initiatives using tools like JIRA .
  

Other Responsibilities

• Assist in risk identification and mitigation tracking for data governance projects.
  
• Support emergency response initiatives as directed by the Office of the Chief Data Officer.
  

Requirements

Required Skills & Experience

• 2+ years of experience as a Data Analyst , working with data collection, organization, and management tools (Purview, Azure Information Protection, or similar).
  
• 2+ years of experience with SQL and an understanding of data infrastructure and relational databases .
  
• 2+ years of experience with data governance and security best practices .
  
• 2+ years of experience with data protection technologies , including data discovery, labeling, inventory, CASB, Microsoft Purview .
  
• 2+ years of experience with programming/scripting languages and data tools for big-data processing .
  
• 2+ years of experience creating Excel formulas, managing complex spreadsheets, and using data analysis tools (Pivot Tables, PowerQuery, etc.) .
  
• 2+ years of experience with Information Rights Management and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technologies .
  

Highly Desired Skills & Experience

• Azure and/or Data Certifications (Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, etc.).
  
• Experience in a big-data environment or working with large-scale data security initiatives .
  
• Familiarity with Power Platforms for automation and workflow management .
  
• Experience working with VITA project standards/requirements .
