Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's or advanced degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, Biology/Molecular/Microbiology, Occupational Safety/Health, or related field.
Technical training covering OSHA, EPA, NFPA or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards.
Current HAZWOPER 40 hour training
Experience developing and administering safety training.
Demonstrated experience working within a laboratory environment.
Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM). Iowa Certified Groundwater Professional, Iowa Certified Construction Site, Pollution Prevention Inspector (ICCSPPI), Incinerator Operator.

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department at Iowa State University seeks a qualified candidate for the
Environmental Engineer I/II position. EH&S, reporting to the Senior Vice President of the Division of Operations and Finance Services, plays a vital role in fostering a culture of safety and sustainability. The department is dedicated to:

Environmental Engineer supports a range of federally mandated environmental programs at Iowa State University, including compliance under the
Clean Water Act (CWA) ,
Clean Air Act (CAA) ,
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) , and related initiatives such as
NPDES ,
SPCC ,
MS4 ,
Title V permits , and
NDW2 programs. Responsibilities include conducting environmental sampling and inspections, managing inventory and permit-related materials, supporting hazardous waste minimization and recycling efforts, collecting and transporting a variety of special wastes to the ISU-Regulated Materials Facility (ISU-RMF), operating a pathological waste incinerator, delivering environmental training, assisting in regulatory programs (RCRA, UST, AST), providing compliance guidance to labs and facilities, liaising with regulatory agencies, and offering technical support during hazardous material emergencies. The role also requires physical capability to lift up to 40 pounds, handle chemicals and tools, and wear respiratory protection.
Candidate may be hired as an Environmental Engineer I or II, depending on experience.
Level Guidelines: Environmental Engineer I (bachelor's Degree) PS808• Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision
• Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode
• Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope
• Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained
• Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate
• May lead projects of limited scope and complexity
• May provide guidance to students
Level Guidelines: Environmental Engineer II (Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience) PS809• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals
• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems
• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests
• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff
• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity
• Provides guidance to students
