Job Description

Job Description:

The candidates should have teaching expertise and practice-based experience in early childhood education and care and child development, or a closely related field (such as human development, child development, psychology, family studies, education policy, etc.), to begin Spring 2025.

We are seeking a collaborative and creative colleague who can advance the College’s strategic plan by preparing future educators who are committed to transform education by centering equity and disrupting systemic inequities. We are especially interested in candidates who share UMass Boston's commitment to urban populations, and who possesses inclusionary and transdisciplinary perspectives on early education and care.

Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate evidence of high-quality teaching practice at the higher education level and in community-based or public-school programs. The Department also values candidates who can combine theory and practice in classroom instruction, who have experience developing curricula for early educators, and who have experience with introductory STEM content.  Finally, we seek candidates who have experience in coaching educators working with multilingual students who are racially and ethnically diverse.

Responsibilities include teaching four courses per semester in the undergraduate and Master’s programs; supervising students in their pre-practicum and practicum settings (internships/student teaching); mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students; assisting with curriculum development and assessment for professional associations' accreditation, and contributing to the university's urban mission, to university/departmental committees, and to professional associations.

Requirements

Candidates must have a master’s degree, or a Ph.D., in education or early childhood education, Applied Child Development, Curriculum and Instruction, STEM Education, or a closely related field (such as human development, psychology, family studies, education policy, etc.).  They must have experience teaching at the college level or in community-based early education programs, early intervention, or public-school Pre-K through 2nd grade in inclusive settings and/or in urban contexts.

Additional Information:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction values community engagement, academic excellence, and social justice. Faculty are committed urban practitioners who seek to facilitate educational opportunities that promote professional excellence, who understand and can translate various cultural understandings of education, and who underscore the importance of 21st century skills.

The College of Education is ranked the top public college of education in the state of Massachusetts (U.S. News and World Report, 2024) and is dedicated to social justice, inclusion, equity, and eradicating all forms of discrimination, oppression, and racism. Its Department of Leadership in Education is home to cohort-based M.Ed., CAGS, PhD and EdD programs that are highly regarded in the region and nation. We provide a dynamic environment for faculty and graduate students to engage in nationally recognized research, especially in areas related to equity issues, school reform, organizational change in Pre-K to 12 and higher education, education policy, leadership, and the social contexts of urban and higher education from local, state, national and global perspectives. For more information, please visit https://education.umb.edu/aboutand www.umb.edu.

UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who reflect the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.

Application Instructions:

To apply, please submit a CV and a letter of interest that addresses your qualifications for the position, including academic preparation, teaching experience, your agenda for teaching and service, and contact information for three confidential letters of recommendation online.

Review of applications will begin November 15th, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.  Inquiries can be directed to the Department Chair, lisa.gonsalves@umb.edu
