Job Description

In addition to teaching one to two section(s) of Chinese, a Princeton Day School teacher is expected to contribute to school life outside the classroom in an extracurricular activity, such as coaching or clubs.  One to four times a semester, a weekend or evening activity or campus event may be required.

The ideal candidate is expected to:

  • Teach one to two section(s) of Chinese
  • Assess students’ academic and conceptual development
  • Provide clear oral and written feedback to students and communicate with families as needed
  • Collaboratively work on curriculum development and alignment, and attend Department meetings
  • Foster a learning environment that is student centered and that supports students’ social and emotional needs
  • Differentiate teaching and learning based on students’ cognitive needs and learning style
  • Possess a well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members; be committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Independently and collaboratively prepare curricula that balance linguistic mastery, cultural understanding, and joy of learning a new language
  • Develop creative formative and summative experiences and assessments to evaluate student learning
  • Provide opportunities for student self-assessment and engagement in the learning process

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chinese language, literature, history and/or culture
  • Demonstrated experience at both introductory and advanced levels
  • Complete command of the language
  • Strong background, beyond the language, in Chinese cultural traditions, history and literature
  • Proven ability to work in a highly collaborative environment, and to communicate and lead through strong interpersonal skills
  • Affinity for working with high school-aged students
  • A strong commitment to professional growth 
  • Personal characteristics suitable for motivating, inspiring and nurturing young people: enthusiasm, adaptability, patience, creativity, and a boundless sense of humor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Chinese language, literature, history and/or culture
  • Minimum 3 years of proven success teaching high school students
  • Advising and/or mentoring experience
  • Instructional design, curriculum development and assessment experience (developing, delivering, and assessing)
  • Experience teaching in independent schools
