Pathology Lab Manager – Dermatopathology

Pay: $110,000–$136,000/year DOE

We’re looking for a motivated Pathology Lab Manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment, excels at optimizing operations, and is excited to elevate a dynamic and growing lab. In this position, you’ll oversee daily lab operations, guide and develop an outstanding technical team, uphold compliance and quality standards, and step into bench work (up to 30%) during peak times to ensure turnaround goals are met. Your leadership will support the mission and operational excellence of our premier dermatopathology client.

What You’ll Do
Lead Core Lab Operations
Oversee daily workflows to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Anticipate and adjust staffing needs to match volume.
Conduct daily lab rounds to monitor operations, morale, and safety.
Triage tasks and troubleshoot challenges to keep everything running smoothly.
Inspire & Support a High-Performing Team
Lead supervisors and technical staff with clear, consistent communication.
Provide leadership backup when supervisors are out.
Foster a positive, professional culture grounded in accountability and collaboration.
Coach, mentor, and guide staff through performance management and daily support.
Build Training & Competency Programs
Develop training materials, SOPs, videos, and troubleshooting guides.
Lead new hire onboarding and ongoing/targeted staff training.
Manage technical competency assessments and certification requirements.
Support recruiting, onboarding, and career development initiatives.
Oversee Scheduling, Timekeeping & Payroll
Approve schedules (posted at least two pay periods in advance).
Manage PTO approvals while maintaining proper coverage and workflow.
Review payroll and timesheets for direct reports and provide backup support as needed.
Drive Performance Excellence
Conduct 90-day and annual performance evaluations.
Perform biannual technical competency reviews.
Support performance improvement plans through documentation, monitoring, and follow-up.
Champion Workflow Optimization
Analyze and refine workflows to support growth and operational efficiency.
Present data-driven recommendations for staffing, equipment, and process improvements.
Assist with equipment selection, validation, and cost assessments.
Ensure Quality & Regulatory Compliance
Uphold CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and internal quality standards.
Oversee incident documentation and root cause analyses.
Maintain QC standards, instrument performance, and SOP integrity.
Manage Equipment & Facility Operations
Ensure all equipment is functional, safe, and well-maintained.
Coordinate repairs, replacements, validations, and staining quality.
Maintain accurate inventory levels for supplies and reagents.
Hands-On Bench Support
Perform bench duties up to 30% of the time during high-volume or staffing shortages to meet turnaround expectations.
What You Bring
Associate’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field (minimum)
HT/HTL (ASCP) certification
5+ years experience in a high-volume pathology laboratory
3+ years leadership or supervisory experience
Strong understanding of pathology workflows, staining procedures, and CLIA requirements
Excellent communication, organization, and time-management skills
Ability to lead with professionalism, positivity, and adaptability
Proficiency with LIS, EMR systems, and Microsoft Office
Ability to multi-task, maintain confidentiality, and collaborate effectively across teams
