Job Description



This position is in support of the County of Sarasota Florida to provide care for those with special needs who are displaced in the event of a largescale disaster. This position requires the individual to be able to respond to a disaster with in 24 hours of notice and to establish care with in 72 hours of notification. This is a post disaster mission and will require the individual to be onsite until conclusion of the operation.

The Physician Assistant is responsible for enhancing healthcare access and support in special needs shelters, ensuring that individuals receive the attention and care they need during emergencies. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial health assessments of residents to identify medical needs, manage chronic conditions, and monitor acute health issues. 
  • Provide immediate care, administer medications, perform minor procedures, and collaborate with physicians to ensure appropriate treatment plans are in place. 
  • Work closely with other healthcare professionals, social workers, and shelter staff to develop and implement comprehensive care plans that address the unique needs of each individual. 
  • Offer guidance to residents on navigating services available within the shelter. 
  • Monitor and manage chronic health conditions. 
  • Coordinate care with social workers and shelter staff. 
  • Educate residents and caregivers on managing health conditions. 
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and disaster response training. 
  • Ensure the documentation of medical care and health records is maintained. 
  • Advocate for the specific healthcare needs of individuals with disabilities.

Qualifications



Experience Required: 

  • Familiarity with the treatment of special needs populations. 
  • Competency in performing medical procedures within the scope of practice. 
  • Ability to triage and handle multiple patients simultaneously. 
  • Ability to multi-task effectively, prioritizes and execute against multiple priorities. 
  • Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and functional disciplines. 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong PC/Microsoft Office applications background. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong team building and team-member skills. 
  • Excellent data entry skills. 

Education Required:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as health sciences, biology, or psychology. 
  • Master's degree from an accredited PA program is required.
  • Must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) to practice. 
  • Ensure that the PA program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). 

Required Licenses / Certifications:  

  • Current, full and unrestricted licensed as a Physician Assistant in the state of Florida. 
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS. 
  • Current and valid driver's license. 
  • DEA License.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of “Special Needs” populations (Preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance regulations related to discharge planning. 
  • Ability to navigate in an electronic work environment including electronic health records, web-based training and communications.
  • Knowledge of, and moderate proficiency in, common Microsoft Office programs, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of regulations (HIPAA/Privacy Act) regarding the confidentiality of patient medical records and information as well as Personally Identifiable Information (PII). 
  • Demonstrate strong organization and time management skills. 
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Cultural competency and interpersonal skills.

Duty Hours / ON-Call Requirements: 

  • This an upon notification position.
  • Shifts will be 12 hours a day until complete. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Physically capable of performing duties and responsibilities as listed above. 
  • Ability to work in an austere environment exposure to heat and weather. 
  • Frequent use of common office technology such as the computer, telephone etc.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle on behalf of the company. 

Travel / Rotation Requirements: 

  • Travel to Sarasota upon notification.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
