Job Description

School Counselor Direct Supervisor: Head of Lower School and Head of Middle School FLSA : Exempt Type: Full-Time Faculty Employee

The School Counselor is a compassionate, student-centered professional who provides support for the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students across preschool through 8th grade. The counselor fosters a positive school climate, collaborates with staff and families, and implements comprehensive counseling programs that promote growth, resilience, and inclusivity.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small group counseling to support students' academic, social, and emotional development
  • Work with the Dean of Student Life to develop and implement age-appropriate, school-wide programs focused on character education, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and other relevant skills
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to address classroom and school-wide social-emotional needs
  • Support students through transitions, including entering school, moving between grade levels, and preparing for high school
  • Work with the Consulting Psychologist to serve as a resource for families, offering guidance and support related to student development, mental health, and academic progress
  • Address and mediate conflicts or challenges between students and guide them in developing positive peer relationships
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Student Support Plans
  • Support faculty in conducting lessons on SEL topics such as empathy, bullying prevention, decision-making, and mindfulness
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices in school counseling and pursue ongoing professional development opportunities
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress
  • Partner with outside professionals as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or above in school counseling, social work, or a related field
  • Certification or licensure as a school counselor (or eligibility to obtain certification)
  • At least 2 years of experience working as a school counselor or in a related role, preferably across a range of grade levels
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development and age-appropriate counseling practices
  • Exceptional interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion
  • Experience collaborating with diverse populations and supporting an inclusive school community
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Proficiency in technology, including student information systems and virtual meeting platforms

The School Counselor is a 10-month position and follows the academic calendar. Occasional paid work during the summer will be required as needed.
